Reading in First Grade

rd

We use the Houghton-Mifflin Reading series to begin our reading journey. The First Grade reading series is divided into ten themes. The themes are enjoyable and introduce the students to wide variety of literary genre. The skills that the students will explore include phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. The reading strategies that are covered are reviewed throughout the year. Starting with Theme 1, the students will focus on an individual reading strategy with each story. In this way, all the strategies are modeled in a systematic way through the year.
