Learning to read is the highlight of First Grade. Students will learn all the necessary skills to be able to accurately decode words beginning with simple words to multisyllabic words. They will also build a large bank of words that are considered sight words. The reason to read is to comprehend text. In First Grade the students learn how to analyze what they are reading through pre-reading, during reading and post reading activities. They are exposed to a rich array of literature, both fiction and non-fiction and a wide variety of genres.
