This course is a survey of American Literature from the 1600s through the present day. The first semester concentrates on literature of the early Americans and begins our work of tracing the development of the American identity as expressed through a variety of voices. The second semester focuses on the writings of the 20th century. Throughout the year, we'll explore two prevalent themes: the meaning of America and self-transformation. We will evaluate the nature of the "American Dream" as an ever changing and evolving entity.
